TRI CITY – In what was a close affair throughout the first 47 minutes ballooned into a nine-point victory as the South Umpqua boys basketball squad hit their free throws down the stretch to notch a win against rival Sutherlin in Far West League competition.
The game was nip and tuck throughout. From the tip off to the last minute the spread was never more than six points.
In the first quarter the Lancers played tough inside and came out with a 16-14 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the second both teams provided more of the same with South Umpqua slightly edging the Bulldogs 15-14 to take a slim three-point lead, 31-28, at the halfway point.
In the third quarter neither team could make a substantial run as the defense on both sides was stifling and once again the Lancers came out on top of a 13-11 quarter score to push their lead to 44-39.
In the fourth the Bulldogs on several occasions had an opportunity to tie the score but the South Umpqua defense proved to be too much.
Conversely the Lancers also had opportunities to blow the game wide open but could not convert and the contest remained close.
The Lancers largest lead of the game to that point, a seven-point bulge, came with just under a minute left as Sutherlin fouled to stop the clock and as the game clock crept under 30 seconds the lead ballooned to nine.
The Lancers shot a season-high 73 percent from the charity stripe going 19 for 26.
Leading South Umpqua’s offensive charge was Korbin Lussier with 15 points. He also had eight assists, five steals and four rebounds.
Dom Stevenson was also in double figures with 12 points and Kayln Young proved to be a beast on the boards grabbing 11 caroms while scoring nine points, just missing a double-double.
Brock Wells also had nine points and Jayden Kaae checked in with seven.
The win kept South Umpqua perfect in far West Lague play a 2-0 and improved their overall record to 9-6.
On Tuesday, January 27, the Lancers hosted Siuslaw.
South Umpqua came away with a 55-44 victory behind 16 points from Fischer.
Young added nine points and five boards while Lussier chipped in eight points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.
The win keeps the Lancers perfect in league (3-0) and tied with Douglas for the top spot. The two teams meet Friday in Winston.
